A Warm Introduction and Hello World!

Oct 29, 2025

Hello everybody,

Welcome to the first in what I hope to be a series of personal thoughts and ideas meant for public consumption. I have been starting to journal lately as an exercise to collect my thoughts and feelings in my personal life and have been wanting to do the same in the professional arena, which is admittedly consuming (perhaps too much) of my time. As always with my relationship with my patients and business partners, I aim to provide something of value. In this day and age, we are in a world of AI and generated content, where we are surrounded by carelessly accessible information at the press of a fingertip. It is my sincere wish that I try my best with this medium and provide something of worth to contribute to the digital age.

My name is Dr James Yap. I am a New Zealand-born and educated dental surgeon working in Singapore over the last 10 years. Dental implants/bone grafting and surgery, as well as dental sleep medicine, are my passions. I have managed to curate somewhat of a working relationship with a few brands over the course of my career and, as such, occasionally will lecture and teach for them. As a scientist and a part of the healthcare fraternity, I feel we should all be improving ourselves and, first and foremost, be open to new information.

So, needless to say, that while all thoughts and opinions here should be rooted in some form of evidence base, as I will be wearing my dentist hat, it is inevitable that we will colour any thoughts (verbal or otherwise) with our own proverbial brush, so to speak. I will leave it to you as a reader to formulate your own conclusions and decide if there are any actionable thoughts to discern. If anything, they should provide some form of stimulation for discussion or raise questions inside your minds.

I hope to discuss new developments in the field as well as challenge current dogmas, which are unfortunately prevalent in healthcare as a whole but especially in the dental field.

It is not without some amount of trepidation as I start something like this; most of which is completely foreign to me and forces me to use a different set of skills I have developed over my professional career. So, please join me in this journey as I discover the “joy of writing” and indulge my thoughts from time to time.

Looking forward to connecting with everyone over the course of the next few posts.
